Princess Ben

Princess Ben by Catherine Gilbert Murdock

Summery:When Ben's uncle and mother are killed in some sort of an attack everyone thinks it was their neighbors.Their neighbors say it was a dragon. The people of Montagne scoff at that.Ben is left with her harsh aunt and the hope that her father will return. With the growing threat of invasion she turns to what food she can find and a secret room and magic book.

Romance:One kiss, dreams of kisses and almost a kiss.Proposal of marriage.
Bad Romance:Some soldiers in the enemy camp (while Ben was pretending to be a boy) talk about a girl who willingly gives her self up.To you know. The prince of the neighboring country, to spite Ben, danced with a lady whose"chest was only contained by goodwill.".

Violence:A dragon (dying and killing people), people shooting at Ben (they thought she was a witch) and a battle.

Time Period:Medieval.

What I Thought:It was a little boring at times and Ben certainly had flaws. She did perk up though. And the end was very exciting.I'm not sure I would really recommend it, but the end was good.Maybe if it had been shorter....

Roadside Assistance

Roadside Assistance by Amy Clipston

Summery:After Emily's mom dies, her dad's business starts to go downhill. Now they are bunking with her dad's younger sister and family. They just don't seem to get her.How she is happier with cars than with shopping. In fact no one seems to be getting her lately.Like how she just can't pray since her mom's death. And how her dad won't discuss it with her(her mom's death). She finds some comfort helping the guy next door (Zander) fix his car though.

Romance:A couple kisses, she likes Zander and has some relationship problems before it straitens out.
Dustin broke up with Emily at the beginning. Not big other than that she is kinda thrown off by it.She thinks it was because she worked with cars.Emily's cousin Whitney has a breakup too.

Language:None that I can remember.

Violence:her dad was working on a car and a piece spun out and  came at him like a saw and cut him pretty bad.A couple arguments.

Other:Her Mom dies of cancer.

Time Period:Modern.

What I Thought:To me it felt a lot like a Christian Sarah Dessen.(I accidentally spelled her name wrong earlier so sorry!)I really liked it.At first(before I began)I thought that because it was about cars I might not like it.But I really did.It was awesome!

Growing Up Amish

Growing Up Amish by Ira Wagler

Book Was About:The story of how Ira Wagler found God.He grew up in an old order Amish community.During the time when he was Seventeen to Twenty-Six he ran away five times. And he returned five times. He talks about his family, his famous Dad, what drove him away and how he was sure he was condemned to Hell when he left the Amish.

Objectionable Content:He smoked for about ten years. He got hooked. Also while he was running around outside in "the world" he drank as did some of his friends. He confessed running around with a English women.Though I don't think anything really happened.

What I Thought:I really liked it.It was so interesting! How the Amish lived, grew up, their rules...everything.I thought it was so sad that when he left he always thought that God would never accept him unless he was Amish. It is a great book with a great story, very redemptive and eye opening.

Rating & Age:4 stars. 14/15 up.

I got this book free from the publisher.

Steel by Carrie Vaughn

Summery:After she looses a big bout(fencing match), Jill gets pretty depressed. While on vacation in the Bahamas, she finds part of a rapier. On the tour boat she falls overboard and comes up in the early 17th century on a pirate ship. She becomes a member of the crew and learns that the rapier piece is from a terrible pirate's sword. His name is Blane and the ship's Captain, Marjory Conner, has a score to settle with him.And she thinks that Jill is the piece she needs. What Jill really wants to do is get back home.Though she has learned a lot of fencing origins and made some great friends.

Romance:One kiss, medium description.Blane was once(maybe) in love with Captain Conner.

Language:A**, D*m*, C**p, Ba***rd and H**l.

Violence:Killing, fighting, mention of marooning people, killing a baby, several injuries during battles and having to amputate. Also they saved some slaves from a slave ship. They were in bad condition.

Other:Drinking, brief mention of raping (a warning to be careful really) and some brief mentioning of black magic.

Time Period:Early 1600s.

What I Thought:It was a good tale, very educational and interesting.Good plot and some really good action.Wonderful setting too :)

Rating & Age:4 stars.13 up.

Tempest Rising

Tempest Rising by Tracy Deebs.

Summery:When Tempest almost drowns close to her birthday she knows it is coming. Her choice is coing up.The one her Mom said would come. She has already grown gills.Who knows when the tail will come.Yes her mother was a mermaid. And she must choose land or sea. When a strange boy named Kona shows up and knows all about her, things start to speed up.Which will she choose and can she survive the coming tempest?

Romance:Medium descriptive(for most) kisses(a lot!), some make out scenes (sad, so sad). And talk of loving someone.
Bad Romance:Tempest cheats on her boyfriend Mark, and he kinda cheats on her.But she was gone for three weeks! Her parents didn't get married until after her mom was pregnant. It is implied that she has already gone all the way, mention of a memory on Mark's bed kissing(no description just that sentence basically).

Language:H**l, S**t,A**,bi**h and they kept saying bull.I don't know if that is a cuss word or not. Those were the majors.

Violence:Her mother is pretty much murdered.Destroyed by a sea monster. In a tapestry this same monster was killing mermaids. One was headless. They come back to that once or twice.A couple murders/killings.Tempest almost killing Kona by accident.

Other:She took of her clothes once, while swimming and then forgot about. They rest of what she had on became kinda became see through. She got a robe and Kona joked that she didn't have to cover up just because of him. When she changed into mermaid(tail)and Kona into a selkie they lost their clothes.Neither saw the other though.

Time Period:Modern.

What I Thought:Well a ton of stuff (like all the romance.A little would have been fine. But what they had seemed over the top.Too much for me.)could/should have been left out.Other than that(and a few other issues) it had a good plot.

Rating & Age:3 stars.14/15 up.

Interview With Book Blogger!

Hey guys! Here is an interview Book Blogger allowed me to do with her!
Book Nook
How did you start blogging?
I love to read. And I used to love to make lists of books that I'd read and showing them to my teacher. One time he said that I should write reviews on the books that I've read and put them down somewhere, a blog, maybe? I wouldn't really have thought much of it, but at the time a friend of mine had just discovered this great new thing called "Blogger." I was really excited, so I got permission to start a blog and post my book reviews on there. And that's how it all began...
What inspired/inspires you to blog?
That's a hard question to answer. Lots of things inspire me. For instance, finding a good book makes me feel really enthusiastic to go share it with the world. The same goes for a good recipe. If something really good happens in my life (winning a competition, finally finishing a story, etc.) then I want to share it with everyone - which is what I do on my life blog. I LOVE animals, so reading an interesting fact on them makes me want everyone else in the world to know that too. I don't want to keep all that to myself, I want to share it with everyone!
Your blogs are:
My first blog is called Book Nook. My second one is Baker's Corner. Next is my animal blog, Kingdom Animalia. And lastly is my life blog, called Life...The Way I See It. That one I created just this year, in January. I'm not sure if all my links work, so here are the addresses:
Your favourite subject in school:
I guess that depends. I really do enjoy Fine Arts. And writing. But some people would say that writing isn't really a subject in school. And math isn't too bad. Actually, I kind of like it... most of the time.
Your favourite ice cream:
Mint Chocolate Chip. Oreo. Strawberry. Chocolate. Cookies and Cream. It goes without saying...
Who in your life is someone you really respect and has given you a lot of "words of wisdom?"
My parents. That's probably what everyone says, but it's so true! There are so many things that your parents do for you. Like, when I'm practicing violin, my Mom puts in the time to help me. And she homeschools me. And my Dad does all sorts of things too. When something of mine isn't working, he fixes it. Also, he gave me a stuffed moose, and I will treasure it always.
Thanks so much for doing this interview with me Book Blogger!

Losing Faith

Losing Faith by Denise Jaden

Summery:It's a shock when Brie's sister falls off a cliff. Some people think it was suicide.Brie doesn't' want to believe it.Her parents are in different types of grieving and don't want to talk about it with her.
So Brie asks some of Faith's friends about her.Faith's best friend is avoiding Brie and Brie is suspicious. She learns about a home group that Faith went to.She was with them when she fell.Brie has some new friends, Tessa, who dresses in black and is tough, to replace Amy who cheated with Brie's boyfriend. Brie, Tessa and the home group leaders brother, Alis(who just happens to be really cute) are going to get to the bottom of this. But how deep and dark will it be?

Romance:One kiss between Alis and Brie and some hugging.Dustin kissed her once or twice.Bad Romance:she was about to have sex that night, but they ended up going to a party instead(Dustin and Brie). He cheats on her with her best friend, Amy.(or former best friend) A guy in the "home group" acts flirty with everyone and says he is everyone's boyfriend.Kinda weird.

Language:P**s, Bi**h, S**t, C**p, A** were the main ones.

Violence:Murder and almost five more.

Other:A drinking scene(underage, minor scene), occult(a lot of.Specified as bad) and hypnotism (the home group leader wants to do it "for fun".(most everyone is against it.Also specified as bad).

Time Period:Modern.

What I Thought:It was pretty dark I mean her sister dies, the occult was at the end and was pretty bad as well. The plot was good and it was a real gripper. It was just really dark and all the occult was gross.

Rating & Age:2 stars.14/15 up.

The Reluctant Queen

The Reluctant Queen by Joan Wolf

Summery:Esther is a Jew whose mother was a Jew and her father a Persian. She has always lived with her uncle, Mordecai. When he has a dream that he thinks was a warning form God, he sends her to the harem to enter a contest to be the next queen of Persia. The King, Ahaseurus, banished his last wife because she didn't obey him.Esther doesn't like it but follows her uncle's wishes.Surprisingly she is chosen! What will become of her and will she truly save her people?

Romance:After they were married, they obviously do some stuff.Nothing descriptive just obvious.Falling in love with each other, hugging or kissing.

Bad Romance:Her handmaiden and eunuch have sex (though the eunuch was changed so he could not  be a father) before marriage.

Violence:A hanging.A short non-descriptive battle.A decree to kill or run out the Jews. Some arguing.

Other:They checked her to see if she was a virgin.(Eunuch) They did something to the eunuchs so they could not hurt/rape the women.

Time Period:Not sure umm...probably (asked Mom because I didn't want to look it up) about 400 B.C.

What I Thought:There were some changes, but for the most part it was pretty close to the really story. It really went into what could have happened to Esther.Like her getting pregnant and really loving Ahaseurus/Xerxes.I thought that the story was well written and the plot was good.

Rating 7 Age:4 stars.Ask your mom about it, but I would say...14 up.

Summery:Alex Rider busts up a drug dealer and through that he has another mission with M16.
Two murders, both rich men. Both with sons that went t o a reclusive reform school.M16 wants him to go undercover and find out what is going on.He still isn't allowed weapons and he really could have used them on this mission.

Romance:The family that he is supposed to be a part of, their daughter he saves from a train. She says he can kiss her if her wants and he says he would rather kiss the horses they were riding(GO ALEX!).
One of the boys at the school claims to have three girlfriends.(P.S. That is bad!)

Language:D**n.The big one.

Other:Some talk of high school kids doing drugs and Alex being mad about that.

Time Period:Modern.

Waht I Thought:Very exciting, tense, great adventure.Awesome plot too.

The Goddess Test

The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter.

Summery:Kate's mom is dying and she isn't ready to say goodbye. When she meets a strange guy named Henry and he brings her kind of friend back to life she wonders if he is who he says he is.He asks her to read the story of Persephone. He asks her to come and try to pass seven tests, if she does she will reign in the underworld with him and become immortal. And while she is taking the tests he will keep her mother alive.Who he claims to be and who she is starting to believe he is?Hades.

Romance:A couple kisses, hugs and touches. One or two of the kisses are descriptive.Talking about liking/loving.
Bad Romance:They cuddle in bed and she says nothing happens.(I believe this is wrong and found it disgusting.) They are drugged as part of two tests and go farther though it isn't descriptive.Just sort of obvious that they went farther. And they specify it as wrong. Her friend, Ava also sleeps with a guy and gets in trouble for it too.

Language:About four, P**s and h**l were two I can remember.

Violence:People getting hurt, murdered and uh yeah lots of dead people.Hades ya know?

Other: The Greek gods and magic.

Time Period:Modern.

What I Thought: I didn't like how they kinda slept together even though they said it was wrong and everything.Other than that I really enjoyed it and it had a good plot.I thought it was an interesting new take on Greek mythology.

Rating & Age:3 stars.Even though I really did like it.It has some issues.14/15.

Start Here

Start Here by Alex and Brett Harris

Read my review of Do hard Things!

Book Was About:This is the sequel to Do Hard Things. It was basically about:
  • What to do after a hard thing
  • The questions you'll face
  • About small hard things building up to big hard things
  • How others have gone through stuff relating to what they're talking about or how they have
As always great and inspiring stories. You can definitely understand what they are talking about and see how it can apply to you.

Objectionable Content:One (maybe more) of the stories was about a girl and/or her friends standing against abortion.

What I Thought:I really liked it!I could relate to the questions (Some I had asked myself before I read the book) and I loved all the different stories.I think Do Hard Things was better, but this one was only just underneath it.Close second. It starts you off right where you are.

Rating & Age:4 stars.Mainly for teens, but tween could read it too.

Entwined by Heather Dixon.

Summery:When Azalea's mother dies her world is turned upside down. She must take care of her younger sisters. All eleven of them. She promised her mother. There father seems to want nothing to do with them. They are in a year of black dresses and no dancing. So when they find a secret magic passage to a secret pavilion where they can dance they don't hesitate. But something starts to go bad. They are being held to a promise by the strange Keeper(and that is his name too) of the pavilion.
And there father is showing more interest now that they are going somewhere to dance and won't tell him(they swore on silver). He sets up a sort of contest, to see if anyone can figure out where they are going.

Romance:A couple kisses, talk of arranged marriages, talk of marriage (just getting married nothing else), teasing about liking someone, talking about someone liking someone, realizing someone was in love and tingles. And one-two hugs.

Violence:Swearing on Silver(then you can't talk about what you promised. It won't let you), Keeper swearing to kill the King and almost succeeding, several shootings(I don't think anyone was hit), coming back from war wounded, some torturing(talking about it or seeing it:sewing eyes shut, stealing souls after the person died, ripping off limbs, drinking blood as an oath.Nothing that visual though.Just stories.) and several people getting hit.

Time Period:Medieval.

What I Thought:Awesome, I could see some similarity to The Princess of The Midnight Ball (Jessica day George) like how she(Heather) described Keeper and the way some of the girls acted. It is a great retelling and fairy tale. Two thumbs up!

Rating & Age:5 stars.14 up.

Beauty Sleep

Beauty Sleep by Cameron Dokey

This is the nicer cover.I read a different one, but I wanted to put this on up.
Summery:When Aurore was born two spells were cast on her.For awhile that was her.But soon she became who she really was, working along with the peasants and being estranged from the nobles who didn't like that she did that.Always careful not to prick herself and bring on a hundred years sleep. After her sixteenth birthday strange things start to happen.and Aurore knows that it is because of her.So she runs away into the enchanted forest to find her destiny.

Romance:Talk of true loves kiss, a couple of kisses and hugging.

Violence:A curse and a banishment.

Time Period:Medieval.

What I Thought:It was different then the other versions.I liked it.The plot was good and she explored different ideas. The first few chapters were a little boring but once you got past that you won't be able to put it down!

Rating & Age:4 stars.13 up.

The Throne Of Fire

The Throne Of Fire by Rick Riordan.

Summery:With the threat of Apophis waking up in a  few days Cater and Sadie are on another adventure. This time to wake Ra, the sun god.The House of Life and some of the other gods are against them.Which can complicate things.Though this time the Kane's have some new friends, Walt, who has a secret and kinda likes Sadie, and some of their other trainees as well as Bast's friend Bes, a hairy dwarf god with a (*cough*fashion crime*cough*) speedo.

Romance:Anubis kisses Sadie, Carter is pretty freaked out when he wakes up Zia, and start mouth to mouth resuscitation.(sp?) She doesn't really like it and takes it in the wrong way. They are on off and because she doesn't really know him or trust him. Sadie is stuck between Anubis and Walt.Bes liked bast, who didn't like him and Twarharet( the Hippo goddess.I forgot how to spell it.) liked him.

Language:Mentions someone cussing, but no actual words.

Violence:Tons of strange monsters, people trying to kill the, evil lurking and lots of danger.Oh and a scary dwarf God in a speedo(hairy too.Major crime!).

Other:Egyptian gods, magic and magicians.

Time Period:Modern.

What I Thought:Funny with an adventurous and sassy twist.A good exciting read, good plot and to sum it up awesome! It was more serious than the first one.more at stake and a cliffhanger :(

Rating & Age:5 stars.13 up.

Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz.

Summery:Alex is wakened at 3:00 in the morning to learn that his uncle and guardian was in a car accident. He wasn't wearing his seat belt.To Alex it just doesn't add up.As he investigates and gets into some tight spots, he learns that his uncle Ian was a spy.And now his ex-boss wants Alex to go and work on the case that killed his Uncle.A fourteen year old boy going into a possible bad guy's headquarters, incognito and no weapons. He'll have to follow up and see what his uncle learned if he wants to figure anything out.

Language:The bad guy keeps saying Bliddy.I don't think that is cuss word and that it is close to Bloody.

Violence:Being in great danger, almost drowning twice, someone is killed by a giant jelly fish, several people murdered/shot, people trying to kill Alex, holding a gun on someone, shooting at some people and jumping out of a fifteen-story building to another.

Time Period:Modern.

What I thought:Fast paced, an easy read because it is so exciting and a real page turner. It's an action book so if a ton of that and a little violence(people trying to kill Alex) are fine for you, then you are good.

Rating & Age:4 stars.13/14 up.
