A Curse Dark As Gold

A Curse Dark As Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce (A retelling of Rumpelstiltskin)

Read my review of another of the author's books, Starcrossed.
Summery:When Charlotte and Rosie's father dies they are left alone.Just their small town and the mill.Charlotte takes over and is determined to save the town, the mill, herself and her sister.Through troubles like the surprising arrival of their uncle, who isn't what they thought and has a hidden past, and the big debt their father had at the bank that they are struggling to repay. And then there is the banker that is showing interest in Charlotte. She doesn't know what to think about that.Charlotte is determined to continue living where they belong at the mill.

Romance:Some kissing.Mention of understanding how a lot of young wives get have babies the first year they are married (no description otherwise). (spoiler!) She mentions that because of getting married to the banker.Hugging, holding hands and liking/loving someone.
Inappropriate Romance:Charlotte's uncle is implied to have played some ladies..some of which were married.

Language: D*m*.

Violence: A couple of drownings mentioned, some people dying, people getting injured(not to badly) and some arguing/yelling.

Other:Magic, gambling, curses, ghosts and some slight(not underage) drinking.

Time Period:Late 1800s or early 1900s.

What I Thought:It was dark at some places... the beginning wasn't as exciting and you didn't get into it as much. The last parts were sad and otherwise pretty exciting. It was better then Starcrossed. The main "not so good read" part was that it was dark.Nice setting though.

Rating & Age: 3 stars. 13/14 up.
